PhD Programs Online Position at LIRMM-INRIA, France

INRIA is the French national institute for research in computer science and automation. The strategy of the institution closely associated scientific excellence and technology transfer. INRIA priorities are seven: (i) modeling, simulation and optimization of complex dynamic systems, (ii) programming: security and reliability of computer systems, (iii) Communication, Information and Ubiquitous Computing (iv) the interaction with real and virtual worlds (v) in computer science, (vi) computer science, (vii) medical computer science.
The research interests of the DEMAR project focused on modeling sensorimotor rights, including the muscles, sensory feedback and neural network engines. Ultimate objective of this team is focused on developing advanced neuroprosthesis for restoration of the defective functions.

Descriptif

Identification of biomechanical dynamics and muscle dynamics for neurologically damaged patient is already challenging as the system response can drastically vary depending on the degree of the patient deficiencies. The extracted information with System Identification technique is finally to be used for the understanding of motor control function in such patient and for motion synthesis and control using FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation). However, In FES, movement synthesis and control are still a challenging task due to the complexity of whole body dynamics computation and the nonlinearity of stimulated muscle dynamics. For the motion synthesis, recently some optimization technique started to be applied in whole body simulation platform where the desired criteria can be defined and evaluated through an accurate numeric simulation such as OpenSim software of Stanford Univ. For the control, one of the challenge concerns the feedback (torque, EMG, joint angle) that can be used to control joint angle, torque or stiffness. Moreover, control strategies have to be designed in order to be performed on portable architecture and tuned through advanced modeling and simulation.

This PhD work is performed under the collaborative project named @walk (artificial walking) between INRIA DEMAR project and AI lab of Stanford University. http://www.lirmm.fr/~fraisse/@WALK/

Nottingham Trent University Announce PhD Programs Online Studentship

Nottingham Trent University Announce PhD Studentship in Modernism, Memory and Architecture in the Developing World, UK

Study Subject: Modernism, Memory and Architecture in the Developing World
Employer: Nottingham Trent University
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years.
This call is inviting doctoral studentship application from individuals interested in exploring the nature of Modernity within the context of the developing world, with special focus on Asia. The notions of Modernity and Modernism emerged out of specific concerns within the post Industrial Revolution Western culture. Earlier work on the Indian subcontinent has shown the complex nature of the two terms within the fast evolving context of the developing world. The pressures of demographics and development, as well as the cultural context in which Modernity was subjected to operate, have resulted in a specific kind of Modernism. High density complex urban environments have evolved adding novel and unique dimensions to our understanding of urbanism. The peculiar urban development characteristic of the informal sector of developing cities could no longer be disregarded as inconsequential. In there, collective and cultural memory and history, as well as typological and material preferences have played a distinctive role. The project will explore the nature of this Modernity within the urban context of the ‘developing world’.
